There are currently two methods for loading media and data to your LineVision Online account: through the web-based interface and through some versions of Remote GeoSystems desktop-based software. While either method can be used, there are times when it might make sense to use one method over the other.
Transcoding Video for Web Streaming #
Before we get into best practices on uploading media and data to LineVision Online, its important to understand a little about the video ingestion and transcoding process. In order for video to be consumed on-demand by end users over the internet, it must first be transcoded to a web-streamable format(s) that can be streamed over the web, taking into account different devices and internet speeds. When uploading to LineVision Online, the following transcoded video copies and resolutions are created for each video file; 1080, 720, 480, 240.
Depending on the resolution, size and number of video files, this transcoding process can substantially tie up computing resources. If the video transcoding is taking place after it is uploaded to LineVision Online, then the transcoding process consumes computing and storage resources from the LineVision Online instance. If the video transcoding is taking place on a PC using Remote GeoSystems desktop-based software, then the transcoding process consumes computing and storage resources from the local PC. For this reason, whenever possible, we usually recommend using the desktop-based software method when uploading videos, especially for larger video files. This way the processing happens at the desktop level, which means the original source video does not have to be uploaded to LineVision Online, thereby drastically reducing storage cost and enabling quicker upload times.

As mentioned above, transcoding videos after uploading to LineVision Online utilizes significant computing and storage resources and as a result can increase the economic cost of using LineVision Online over time. Whenever possible, we recommend using the desktop-based software uploaders for quicker upload and data availability as well as flexibility over what copies of the videos get uploaded that can impact storage.
geoProjects #
Many LineVision desktop-based software users will spend time analyzing, organizing and saving their media and data files into multi-file geoProject deliverables. While media and data items can be added to geoProjects at any time using the LineVision Online interface, the only way to upload a completed geoProject to LineVision Online is through the desktop-based software uploaders.
Multiple Synchronized Videos #
LineVision Desktop is also the most efficient method to upload multiple videos captured at the same time from the same platform such as a multi-sensor gimbal camera.
When to Use LineVision Online Uploading #
IMPORTANT: Do not navigate away from your LineVision Online web browser during the upload! This will interrupt the upload process and some data will not be uploaded. Instead, open a new browser window for web browsing during upload.
Non-video Media & Data #
Since videos are the only media type that require transcoding, other items such as photos, KML and associated files can be uploaded without additional impact on computing and storage resources.
