The Map Viewer is where you will see points, lines and/or polygons representing media items and data on maps. You may see thumbnails and summary information for media items when clicked in the Map Viewer. In three corners of the Map Viewer, there are several controls for engaging various functionality.
Map Controls #
Zoom in/Zoom out Buttons #
The +/- buttons allow you to zoom in and out on the map. You may also use the scroll wheel on the map.
Toggle To Pan or Rotate in 3D #
The rotate or pan option changes how you can move the screen. The buttons only appear while in 3D mode.
Compass Indicator #
The compass indicator shows which direction the map is facing and when you click this option the map will realign with north facing up.
2D/3D Toggle Switch #
These buttons let you switch between the 2D and 3D map view.
NOTE: Certain functionality may vary depending on the map view.
Search Button #
Referencing the image below, click the Search button to expand the search bar. For more detailed information on using this feature please see the Search & Filter section.
Web Maps Button #
Referencing the image below, click the Web Maps button to expand the selection bar and see the dropdown with datasets available to you through your ArcGIS Online account.
NOTE: You must have a linked ArcGIS account to view this option.
Web Scenes Button #
Referencing the image below, click the Web Scenes button to expand the selection bar and see the dropdown with datasets available to you through your ArcGIS Online account.
NOTE: You must have a linked ArcGIS account to view this option.
Feature Layer Button #
Referencing the image below, click the Feature Layer button to expand the selection bar and see the dropdown with datasets available to you through your ArcGIS Online account or add a new feature layer if you know the URL.
NOTE: If you don’t have a linked ArcGIS account, this feature is limited.
When you click the Add Feature Layer option, the following window will appear and you can insert a URL if you have one.
Basemaps Button #
Referencing the image below, click the Basemaps button to expand the selection bar and see the menu with available datasets.
Right Click Features #
If you hold right click on a point on the map, you will be able to rotate the map instead of just moving it with a left click.
When you right click anywhere on the map viewer, the following list of options will appear.
Add Annotation #
Type any notes and click Save, and the annotation will appear in the spot that was clicked on as a blue circle. The annotation will appear in the Media Browser and when you hover over the spot it will become a white square. To learn more about annotations, click here.
Zoom In/Zoom Out #
Click these options to zoom into the spot that was clicked on or to zoom out.
Zoom To #
This option will move the map so that the screen is centered on whatever point you clicked while zooming in at the same time.
USA/World View #
Clicking the USA View option will change the zoom on the map to include all of the United States. Clicking the World View option will zoom out even farther so you can see all of your media across the entire world.
