Estimate Camera Target Footprint on Map

Overview #

LineVision Desktop can estimate the mathematical shape and altitude of a video and project that “footprint” onto the map so the user gets a more complete picture of which landmarks on the map are observed in the video. This article contains tips and tricks for utilizing Estimated Camera Target Footprint in LineVision Desktop.

Working with Estimated Camera Target Footprint #

Load the video into LineVision Desktop. In the Media Browser, right click the video and select Camera Target Footprint Options > Estimate Camera Target Footprint (CTF) on Map

Input the camera specifications that were used to capture the video in the Camera Projection Settings box.

After clicking “OK” in the Camera Projection Settings box, if there are other videos loaded in the Media Browser, a box will appear asking if you would like to apply the same settings to all loaded videos.

This box asks if you would like to apply the estimated camera target footprint settings to all loaded videos.

You can make further adjustments to the Camera Field of View (FOV), Altitude Offset, Rotation Adjustment, and check or un-check the Camera Angle is Absolute box, shown in the red box below. These changes will alter the shape of the purple Estimated Camera Target Footprint box, indicated with the red arrow. Play the video and adjust the numbers based on landmarks in the video that coordinate with the same landmarks on the map.

NOTE:  The adjustments made to the items in the red box below will be applied from that point in the video forward. This accounts for things like camera zoom at the time of video capture. If adjustments should be applied to the entire video, those changes should be made at the very start of the video playback.

If you wish to use the Estimated CTF data in future sessions, there are a few options:

  • Save the session as a geoProject.
  • Right-click on the media item and select Export Track/Waypoints > Save Track As GPX File or Save Track As CSV File.
  • If you already have text overlaid on your video, right-click on the media item and select Export Overlaid Video.

NOTE: When reopening the file, if your CTF is not appearing, make sure to go to Options > Video Settings > Video Loading > Always Ask For GPS Companion File and select the companion file that was saved with the CTF.
