Overview #
This functionality is generally intended as a post-mission backup process in cases where an issue was experienced while trying to use the optional DSLR Camera Geotagging module on the geoDVR Gen4 (and newer) systems.
Here are some example cases where you might want to use this functionality:
- The GPX companion file is corrupted.
- Not all photos taken in mission were geotagged by the DSLR Camera Geotagging module functionality. NOTE: This can happen if the geoDVR interface or unit itself was shut down before the DSLR Camera Geotagging module had time to complete the real-time geotagging or batch geotagging process.
- You are running an older version of the DSLR Camera Geotagging module that does not support “real-time” DSLR photo geotagging when video is not also being recorded. NOTE: In geoDVR firmware 31.2 and higher, support was added to allow for DSLR photo geotagging even when video is not being recorded.
In these situations, you can geotag DSLR photos using the geoDVR’s “full_gps_log.csv” file after the mission has ended.
IMPORTANT: It is always a best practice to use this tool while the non-geotagged photos are still in the original folder on the geoDVR’s removeable drive. This preserves the dates and times in each photo’s properties, which is how the tool knows where each photo was taken along the GPS track, and thus how to geotag them. We strongly recommend you do NOT remove the photos nor geoDVR-created CSV file from the geoDVR drive until after this process is complete! Removing the photos from the geoDVR drive to other devices or locations can change both the photos’ Date Created and Date Modified properties, possibly reducing the effectiveness of this tool.
Geotag Photos Using the geoDVR GPS Log in LineVision Desktop #
Post-mission, take the removable geoDVR drive to a computer with LineVision Desktop – Ultimate edition installed. Connect the removable geoDVR drive with the SSD-to-USB cable that was included with the geoDVR unit.
In LineVision Desktop – Ultimate edition, go to Advanced > geoDVR Tools > Geotag Photos using CSV Log.
Referring to the image below, browse to the geoDVR drive connected to your computer (usually the D drive) for the CSV file titled “full_gps_log.csv” (typically located at \geoDVR_Files\DATE\gps_log\) that was created by the geoDVR during the mission.
Referring to the image below, browse the geoDVR drive again and select the photos that still need to be geotagged. These photos will usually be in whichever folder was designated when configuring the DSLR Camera Geotagging module in the geoDVR interface. NOTE: The DSLR Camera Geotagging module automatically moves photos that have been successfully geotagged to a folder titled “geotagged_dslr_images” (typically located at \geoDVR_Files\DATE\geotagged_dslr_images.) Therefore only non-geotagged photos should still remain in the originally designated folder.
IMPORTANT: In general, you will want to geotag your photos using the Date Modified radio button, especially if you have already moved the photos off the removable geoDVR drive to your computer before running this tool. Every time a photo is copied or moved to a new location, Microsoft Windows treats the file as a new photo and will usually update the Date Created property. While there could be “workflow-related” exceptions, such as moving photos across devices with different time zone settings, Date Modified usually best preserves the integrity of the exact date and time the photo was captured during the mission.
Finally, select an output folder on your computer to store the geotagged photos (not the removable geoDVR drive).
Click the Geotag Photos(s) button to run the tool.
