Module Overview #
The optional geoDVR DSLR Geotagging Module is designed for DSLR still image cameras that do not have a method for directly geotagging the image at the time of capture onboard the camera body. When images are triggered they will be sent to the geoDVR SSD data drive where they will be geotagged.
Module Prerequisites #
- geoDVR Gen4 or Gen4 /2
- DSLR still image photo camera (typically without onboard geotagging capabilities)
- DSLR must be configured to capture and send images to the geoDVR in .jpg format
DSLR Geotagging Main Menu #
The DSLR Camera Geotagging menu and options are located under Options > Image Geotagging > DSLR Geotagging.

DSLR Camera Geotagging Main Menu
Enable DSLR Geotagging Sub Menu #

Enable Realtime DSLR GeoTagging #
Select this option to set the geoDVR firmware to attempt to geotag DLSR camera photos as they are written to the geoDVR while recording video.
Enable Realtime DSLR GeoTagging After Recording #
Select this option to set the geoDVR firmware to attempt to geotag DLSR camera photos after the primary video recording functions are completed.
Disable Geotagging #
Select this option to disable DLSR camera photo geotagging.
Set DSLR Photo Storage Directory #
Use this menu item to set the folder location on the geoDVR where the DSLR camera photos will be stored immediately after capture and then referenced by the module for geotagging. In order to successfully geotag the DSLR camera photos, this location must be the same folder where the still camera software (e.g. Capture One, FujiFilm X Acquire, etc.) is set to save DSLR camera photos immediately after capture.
IMPORTANT: Once updated, you MUST save this folder location in the geoDVR user interface after each change by going to File > Save Current Layout and select the specific geoDVR Layout profile where you want it to be applied.
Set DSLR Geotagging Tolerance #

This menu item lets users set the maximum time difference in GPS time and photo creation time for geotagging. If the time difference is greater than the tolerance set here, then the images will not be geotagged.
Set Realtime Geotagging Transfer Time from Gimbal #
This option lets users “fine tune” the time for how long the geoDVR waits before trying to “real-time” geotag an photo after its has been triggered on the gimbal.
PRO TIP: If users notice photos take a while between triggering it from the gimbal controller and for them to appear in the geoDVR, they can change the time to match the actual time it is taking.
DSLR Photo Match Property Sub Menu #

This menu item lets users choose a variable to use for geotagging.
Geotag against Date Created #
This option is recommended for most general applications.
Geotag against Date Modified #
This option is available for situations where the other three options are not appropriate.
Geotag against Date Taken #
This option is available for situations where the DSLR camera puts Date Taken in the EXIF of the JPG and the
camera’s time is properly and exactly set.
Geotag against Trigger Counter #
This option is currently only applicable to gimbal camera implementations that follow the Remote GeoSystems geoDVR Protocol or when a similar protocol has been implemented on the geoDVR.
DSLR GPX Logging Options Sub Menu #

The DSLR Logging Options lets users decide how the geotagged images are handled and referenced upon triggering the still image camera.
Do Not Add to GPX #
Checking this option will NOT add any record of the geotagged images to the GPX files.
IMPORTANT: This option is NOT recommended for most scenarios that will be using Remote GeoSystems LineVision software for post-mission mapping and analysis, especially for those leveraging the “geoProject” functionality.
Trigger & Add DSLR Images as geoDVR Waypoint #
Checking this option will also trigger the geoDVR’s traditional “Drop Waypoint” functionality which means geotagged still images will be captured from any video streams being recorded in addition to the geotagged DSLR image. The result is a additional copy of the geotagged DSLR image will be placed in the corresponding geoDVR Waypoint folder and referenced in the GPX’s <wpt> element along with the geotagged video stream images. In total, three copies of the DSLR image should exist if the “Trigger & Add Geotagged DSLR Images as geoDVR Waypoint” menu item is checked – 1) The original non-geotagged DSLR photo, 2) the geotagged DSLR photo along with the rest of the DSLR geotagged photos for that day located in the “geotagged_dslr_images” folder,
and 3) the “geotagged_dslr_images” folder located with other geoDVR Waypoint image snaps in the folder with the same name as the GPX file for that particular video.
IMPORTANT: This option is recommended for most scenarios that will be using Remote GeoSystems LineVision software for post-mission mapping and analysis, especially for those leveraging the “geoProject” functionality.
NOTE: If a very large number of DSLR photos are being taken, geoDVR users may not want to check this option as it could cause significant geoProject size increases and assuming they are loading the video/waypoint data stored in the GPX into Remote GeoSystems LineVision software, it could cause the geoProjects to run slow due to the size of the DSLR images.
Add DSLR Images as Individual Waypoint #
Checking this option will only capture the geotagged DSLR still image and add a waypoint to GPX file, but will not utilize traditional geoDVR “Drop Waypoint” functionality. Only the geotagged DSLR photos in the “geotagged_dslr_images” folder will be created. The GPX backup and “geotagged_dslr_images” folder within the geoDVR Waypoint photos folder will not be created.
IMPORTANT: This option is NOT recommended for most scenarios that will be using Remote GeoSystems LineVision software.
Run DSLR Geotagging on Previous Days #
This option lets users run the batch geotagging process for photos captured on a previous day. Referring to the image below, select the root folder for the day containing the DSLR photos that need to be geotagged.

Manually Start DSLR Geotagging (Run Now for Today) #
Selecting this option will start the DSLR geotagging batch process immediately versus waiting for the process to run periodically. This option should be used to geotag any remaining non-geotagged photos that were not geotagged during the “non-video recording down-time.” If there is not ample downtime (>10 minutes) between video recordings in a flight/mission to automatically trigger the DSLR geotagging process, then a best practice might be to use this “Manual Start” feature after the mission is complete either during the return trip and/or once back at the hangar with the geoDVR powered by an appropriate power source.
Stop DSLR Geotagging #
Select this option to forcibly stop any DSLR photo geotagging process in progress.
